Weiners, Tweets, and Slut Walks….it’s going to be a long hot summer!

With the U.S. economy in the tank, gas prices on the rise, the housing market in the worst downturn since the Great Depression and the Middle East imploding, the month of June certainly didn’t usher in any renewed confidence for Americans.  The administration appears frozen like a “deer in headlights” with nothing positive to say since the death of  Osama Bin Laden (you can only ride that one for so long- no pun intended).

Demagoguing  the Paul Ryan budget plan, particularly his proposals to fix Medicare as “pushing Grandma off a cliff,” is not along term political strategy as Democrats have come to realize;  particularly since they have yet to put forth a budget proposal of their own.  So what is a concerned, liberal activist Democratic Congressman to do?

Well, it appears that Representative Anthony Weiner, the liberal darling from the Queens, New York Congressional 9th District, a leading candidate to be mayor of New York City and fanatical supporter of ObamaCare has figured it out. Take a picture of your “package” and tweet it to your followers (in this case a coed in Seattle Washington among others)!

Weiner's weiner

Send my regards to Broadway!

One has to admit that Weiner’s “nothing comes between me and my Calvins” moment and his tweet heard round the world has actually brought some much needed levity to our current somber state of affairs. The recently married Weiner initially issued numerous and vehement denials while the far left wing media was screaming “right wing conspiracy” but based on yesterday’s “mea culpa” it really does look like the Congressman was caught thinking with his “wrong head.”

Yes, I sent the photo

As most Washington politicians have learned the hard way, a cover up of a salacious act is usually worse than the act itself. In this case, the act itself wasn’t very exciting and actually pretty lame; somewhat akin to an 11 year old showing off a “boner” to his girlfriend.

But then again, Mr. Weiner spent a week denying the accusations and forcefully attacking his critics while aggressively supported by the likes of The Daily Kos, Think Progress and Media Matters. The more he talked the more he sounded like the old line of defense used by the master himself, Bill Clinton. “It depends what the definition of is is”

Can you imagine if Twitter and Facebook had been around in the days of Monica Lewinsky? It somehow makes us all wax nostalgic.

In the end, Congressman Weiner has shattered his ability to serve the interests of his constituents and now joins a disturbing list of elected officials in our time who’ve lost any sense of self discipline.

There is however a portion of the population which is gung-ho for baring it all.  A new feminist movement called SlutWalks is sweeping the country. SlutWalks started with a local march organized by five women in Toronto and have gone viral with events planned in more than 75 cities in countries from the United States and Canada to Sweden and South Africa. In just a few months, SlutWalks have become the most successful feminist action of the past 20 years.

The walks, which have garnered a great deal of attention – probably what motivates most marchers – were organized in response to a Toronto police officer who said that women should avoid dressing like sluts to prevent sexual assault. This poorly worded but well intended advice was met with outrage from the usual suspects, and they have mobilized their slut militia to march around in cities across North America and beyond.

“The event is in protest of a culture that we think is too permissive when it comes to rape and sexual assault,” said Siobhan Connors, 20, of Lynn, Massachusetts, a Boston organizer. “It’s to bring awareness to the shame and degradation women still face for expressing their sexuality … essentially for behaving in a healthy and sexual way.”

slut shaming

anyone know what they're talking about?

I’m sure that even the slutwalkers themselves don’t fully buy into this. I highly doubt any one of them would stroll around a strange neighborhood in fishnets, pumps and a halter top. No, they are marching in a big crowd to draw attention to themselves and attract male attention in a safe environment. They are simply using the political angle as an excuse to flaunt their sexuality and be cheered on for it.

What's his issue?

Rape as most of us know has nothing to do with sex or desire. It’s a compulsion and a need to dominate others by mental “sickos” in our society. It matters not what you are wearing to any degree and it simply is irrelevant to the rapist if you are even pretty or not. If they think they can dominate you, they will.

From my own observations, having witnessed numerous feminist movements, I tend to come away with the following personal thoughts, which I believe are likely held by most men:

I have found that the term “slut” is used just as frequently by women to describe other women as by men.

Women nowadays are in many ways just as sexually aggressive as men and objectify the opposite sex regularly.

I strongly suspect that most of the women who march in this movement would never be considered “sluts” no matter what they wear or what they do.

I’m a firm believer that the less a woman reveals of herself the more enticing she is. A stylishly, tastefully dressed woman, who is self confident and attractive in her demeanor, will normally generate a lot more interest in my mind than someone who “lets it all hang out” and leaves nothing to the imagination.

Most importantly, I like to unwrap my own gifts in a mutually consensual manner!

But for those women who feel that bringing out the “inner slut” by marching in a SlutWalk is empowering…. go for it!

slut walk dallas

Along those lines, I would propose that all of the women who plan to participate in a SlutWalk first do a SlutBlast. That is, take a picture of yourself in the outfit you’re going to wear and then send it out to your entire email list, Facebook friends and Twitter followers with the caption: “I’m a proud slut come join me in the SlutWalk on (place, date and time)”. That would be empowering and a courageous way to stand behind your convictions.

Which brings us back to Congressman Weiner and his right to display his “inner slut” along with anyone else without being castigated for it.  In fact, having already performed the SlutBlast portion of this challenge,  I think Representative Weiner should lead the SlutWalk scheduled for New York City in August, dressed in the now famous boxer shorts, to show solidarity with the movement and demonstrate why he would still be a great candidate for mayor of the city.

And that’s the way it is here: “a little left of right”
