Progressive Wednesdays………Osama, Obama, Dirty Harry, Tony Soprano, Death, and Resurrection!

It’s amazing how political fortunes can change in the blink of an eye or the squeeze of a trigger. The assassination of Osama Bin Laden has already made Barack Obama a folk hero among Progressives.  Just two weeks ago we were involved in the distracting “birther”  controversy and now we are apparently witnessing a “rebirth” of the man, our leader and President extraordinaire.

Dirty Harry

Go ahead Osama make my day

The left quite simply cannot get enough of this story.  Not only does it seem to have resurrected the President’s fortunes but it has also turned him into a modern day version of Clint Eastwood’s Dirty Harry.  Good god, the man is acting like a Neocon and Progressives are loving it. There’s nothing like “taking out a bad guy” to put a spring in your step.

The Progressive blogs have now latched on to the timeline of the mission to make sure that absolutely no credit is given to the previous administration. Dates and times have been meticulously detailed to show that no previous events led to this triumph. All prior intelligence gathering, questioning of prisoners, leads,  capture of couriers, were for naught until Barack Obama uttered his famous words to Leon Panetta “I want us to redouble our efforts to get Osama Bin Laden”

Just remember to focus on bin Laden

That’s all it took….and suddenly, as if by divine intervention,  bin Laden was located in Pakistan last August.  He was put under surveillance for months until he met his fate at the hands of  U.S. Navy Seals last Sunday, May 1, 2011.  As I’ve stated before, I am delighted that bin Laden was executed by Americans and that the last person he saw was a member of the U.S. Navy Seals pulling the trigger. “Go ahead make my day”

I’m also willing to give the President full credit for his current triumph so long as he accepts the long term geo-political fall out from this action. It appears that the success was so unexpected (apparently the odds were 50/50 that bin Laden was actually in the compound) that the White House couldn’t quite get the story straight.  It issued several conflicting versions of the facts followed by an immediate disposal of the body a la “Tony Soprano style” ….off a boat into the sea weighed down by cement blocks.

But ultimately everything was set straight by the President’s scripted appearance on 60 Minutes where Steve Croft conducted one of the great “softball” interviews in modern television news.  Ace reporter that he is, Croft made sure that the President received every bit of credit for this  successful action, interjecting leading questions when the President seemed to drift off course and leave out some potentially favorable facts. I for one would have rather the 104 year old Andy Rooney conducted the interview for the sheer entertainment value: “Did you ever wonder how long it takes for a body wrapped in white cloth to sink to the bottom of the Arabian Sea?”

Justice was done

The President ended the interview by stating: “Justice was done. And I think that anyone who would question that the perpetrator of mass murder on American soil didn’t deserve what he got needs to have their head examined.” Bravo Mr. President! This from an administration that is still legally pursuing CIA operatives for utilizing enhanced interrogation techniques on some of the world’s worst terrorists. Liberals believe that one can get all the information required by simply following the Army Field Manual for such cases and using the “good cop, bad cop” method.

It reminds me of the movie LA Confidential where detectives Bud White (Russell Crowe) and Ed Exley (Guy Pearce) smash crooked DA, Ellis Loew’s  (Ron Rifkin) head into a bathroom mirror, repeatedly stick his head in a toilet bowl and then hang him by his legs out of a 10 story window until he tells them what they want to know. Afterwards, Ed Exley asks:  “was that the way you used to run the good cop, bad cop?”  Sounds like Hollywood style water boarding to me.

Ok! I'll tell you everything

But why couldn’t we have tried bin Laden in New York City in close proximity to ground zero as Eric Holder had recommended for the other key perpetrators of 9/11?  I suppose that “due process” simply doesn’t apply in this case.  Apparently the left believes that it’s now ok to shoot an unarmed man at point blank range (including an unarmed woman as well) but it’s a travesty to pour water down the throat of a leading terrorist (with a doctor present) who was responsible for 9/11 and knew of other plots in the making.

Go figure! Can you imagine the reaction from the liberal media if George Bush had been in command and an innocent Muslim woman had been shot (although not killed) at close range during a high profile raid on foreign soil? Not a problem for the left.  In a screaming headline the Think Progress blog stated: Obama’s Order to Kill bin Laden Should Put to Rest the Right’s Mockery Of Leading From Behind…..excuse me, but that sound bite originated from President Obama trying to explain his disappearance in the Libyan Kinetic Military Action, his non-action on Syria, and total inaction during the Iranian demonstrations last year.

I'd hate to be a Republican

Baba Wawa chimed in on The View: “well I’d hate to be a Republican.” Why Baba? Do you know something we don’t? Are we planning to unleash Special Forces on Republicans as well?   Oh,  I guess she’s talking about the upcoming Presidential election and how Americans will rush to re-crown their new found hero. That may be, but let’s not forget the following:

“We are now in the fifth month of Barack Obama’s third year in office. Unemployment is at 9.0 percent. We’re about 7 million jobs short of where things stood when Obama took office. Economic growth in the first quarter was 1.8 percent. Housing prices have fallen for 57 consecutive months. Only one in three Americans approve of the way Obama is handling the economy, the lowest point since he took office, and nearly eight in 10 American are less optimistic about the economy than they were a few months ago” So states an article in Commentary Magazine.

Given the above and the inevitable response from Al Qaeda as well as Pakistan and the Taliban, I think Progressives should keep it in their pants for the time being…..

And that’s the way it is here: “a little left of right”
